Our Story
First Japanese Baptist Church was the first Japanese congregation formed in Texas under the Southern Baptist Convention. We began as a church mission of Gambrell Street Baptist Church and continued until 2020 when FJBC became an independent church. We desire to fulfill the Lord’s command to go and make disciples of all nations by serving the Japanese community in the North Texas metroplex and by preparing and sending missionaries to Japan.
第一日本語バプテスト教会は、南部バプテスト連盟のもとで設立された、テキサス州最初の日本語教会です。当教会は、The Gambrell Street Baptist Churchの宣教活動によって始まり、2020年に教会として設立したテキサス北部の地域において日本人のコミュニティに仕えることや、日本宣教への備えをして宣教師を送ることで、「全世界に出て行って福音を伝え、イエスの弟子をつくる」という大宣教命令を全うすることを願っています。
Pastoral Leadership
Sawma Buongpui
Pastor Sawma Buongpui was born in India to one of the Mizo tribes and was raised in a Christian family. At the age of 14 during a youth Bible study he gave His life to the Lord, inviting Jesus Christ to be the Lord and Savior of his life.
In 1999 Pastor Buongpui relocated to Tokyo, Japan and began attending Tokyo Baptist Church (TBC). He participated in outreach and mission trips for the church and became one of the leaders on the evangelism team. After prayer and counsel he attended Tokyo Christian University and graduated with a B.A. in Theology in 2006.
While serving at TBC (2006-2019), his primary responsibility was leading TBC’s multisite project. Under Pastor Sawma’s leadership as a multisite pastor, they launched TBC Misato at Misato city on 2010 and TBC Tachikawa at Tachikawa city in 2012. He also was extensively involved in evangelism, leadership development, and overseeing TBC’s Indian fellowship. He can speak multiple languages, such as: Japanese, English, Hindi, and Mizo.
Pastor Sawma, along with his wife Yasuyo and son Elon, all moved to Fort Worth, Texas in January of 2020, leaving his ministry at Tokyo Baptist Church behind, to pursue a Masters degree at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He was ordained in Fort Worth, Texas at Southcliff Church on May 15, 2022.
In 2021 Pastor Sawma began serving at First Japanese Baptist Church after the need for a pastor arose. He affirms the inerrancy of God’s Word, as well as the authority of the Bible, and invites anyone in the DFW area to come hear the preaching of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
ブォンプイ ソーマ牧師は、インドのミゾ族に生まれ、クリスチャンの家庭で育ちました。14歳の時、青少年のための聖書勉強会で、イエス・キリストを人生の主、救い主として招き、人生を主に捧げました。
1999年、ソーマ牧師は東京に移り、東京バプテスト教会（TBC）に通い始めました。教会のアウトリーチやミッショントリップに参加し、伝道チームのリーダーの一人となりました。祈りと導きの後、東京基督教大学に入学し、2006年に神学の学士号を取得しました。
2006年から2019年の東京バプテスト教会 (TBC)での奉仕中、主な責任は同教会のマルチサイトプロジェクトを率いることでした。マルチサイト担当の彼のリーダーシップのもと、2010年に三郷市でTBC三郷を、2012年に立川市でTBC立川を立ち上げました。また、伝道、リーダーシップ育成、TBCのインド人フェローシップの統括など幅広く活動しました。 日本語、英語、ヒンディー語、ミゾ語など、複数の言語を話します。
2020年1月、Southwesturn Baptist Theological Seminaryで修士号を取得するため、東京バプテスト教会での働きを離れ、妻の恭代、息子の一禄(いーろん)と共にテキサス州フォートワースに移りました。2022年5月15日、テキサス州フォートワースのSouthcliff churchで按手されました。
2021年、第一日本語教会 にて牧師の必要が生じ、奉仕に導かれました。神の言葉の不変性と聖書の権威を確信し、DFW地域の誰でもイエス・キリストの福音を聞くよう招いています。
